Alexander Robert Ernst, age 37, passed away Sunday, May 4, 2025 in a car accident. Visitation will be from 4pm-7pm on Wednesday, May 28, 2025 at the Geilenfeld-Buehner Funeral Home in Oelwein. Services will begin at 1:30 pm on Thursday, May 29, 2025 also at the funeral home with Pastor Steve Benton Officiating. Inurnment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery at Oelwein. www.geilenfledfh.com 

Alex was born on July 4, 1987 in Waterloo, Iowa to Rick and Lori (Ohl) Ernst. Alex graduated from Oelwein High School with the class of 2005. He furthered his education at Iowa State University, where he received his bachelor’s degree in education in 2010 and his master’s degree in higher education in 2014.  

Alex was extremely dedicated to Iowa State Cyclone football. He was a video production specialist and worked with the football program for almost 20 years. Alex was also a fan of the Colts and the White Sox. 

Alex will be remembered for the kindness and the care he showed to his friends and family. He was always checking in on his loved ones and always remembered birthdays and anniversaries. Alex was someone you could always count on for a good time while also being a huge support during the hard times. He shared so much happiness with his family, friends and girlfriend, Madalyn Elliott (deceased 2025). He was also the most devoted of uncles to his nephew and niece. 

Alex is survived by his brother Chris (Aunna) Ernst; nephew and niece Hunter and Adeline Ernst; his grandmother Betty Ohl; his aunts Dana (Dave) Meyers, Denise (Mark) Ballo, Cheryl Ohl, Connie Bliss, Bev Schommer and Deb Reisner; and many cousins and friends. 

Alex is preceded in death by his parents, Rick and Lori Ernst; his grandparents Robert and Vicki Ernst; his grandfather Leslie Ohl; and his uncles Brad Ohl, Merlin Bliss, Duane Schommer and Don Reisner.
