Carl Smith
April 13, 1922 - November 18, 2011

 

Carl Smith, 89, of Oelwein died on Friday, November 18th, 2011 at his home while in the care of his family and Heart of Iowa Hospice.

Carl was born on April 13, 1922 in Oelwein to parents Ferd and Mona Smith. 

In 1940 Carl enlisted in the United States Navy.  He served honorably until his discharge in 1946.  Carl served as Gunner 1st Class on the Battleship Idaho during WWII.  On December 6th, 1945 Carl was united in marriage to Hazel Andrews in Los Angeles, CA.  Carl and Hazel made their home in Oelwein where he was employed at John Deere for 33 years.

Carl enjoyed fishing, playing pool and cards, but mostly his grandchildren.  He will be dearly missed by all who knew and continue to love him.

Left to celebrate Carl’s life are his sons Dan (Donna) Smith of Marion and Steve Smith of Oelwein; his grandchildren: Phil (Tiffany) Smith of Clarence, Lisa (Pete) Gordon of Shellsburg, Candice (Adam) Whitte of Iowa City, James (Theresa Watkins) Smith of Midwest City, OK, and Kevin (Tess Bowers) Smith of Oelwein; his great-grandchildren: Rachel and Max Gordon, Alex, Alaina, and Alexa Smith; his brothers: Don Smith of Oelwein and James Smith of Indiana; his sisters: Mardelle Clendenen of Oelwein, Shirley Nelson of Minnesota, and Jean Smith of New Mexico.

In death, Carl has rejoined his parents, his wife Hazel (1994); his brothers: Robert L. Smith and Tom Smith; his sisters: Doris Lawrence and Carol Lohrer; and his best friend Clarence Haugen.   

Memorials may be made in Carl’s name to Heart of Iowa Hospice.

VISITATION: 4-7 PM on Friday, November 25th, 2011 at the Geilenfeld Funeral Home.

FUNERAL: 11 AM Saturday, November 26, 2011 at the Geilenfeld Funeral Home.
