Irene Gustafson
October 11, 1907 - December 12, 2012

Irene (Coleman) Gustafson, 105 of Oelwein passed away on December 12, 2012 at Mercy Hospital in Oelwein.  Visitation will be from 9:30-10:30 AM on Monday, December 17, 2012 at the Geilenfeld Funeral Chapel in Oelwein.  Funeral services will follow the visitation at 10:30 AM.  She will be laid to rest in Woodlawn Cemetery at Oelwein.

Irene was born October 11, 1907 in Muscatine, Iowa, the daughter of Frank and Roxie (Primmer) Coleman.  When she was 4 years old, the family moved to Vinton and a year later to a farm near Vinton.  Her first eight years of school were spent in one room rural schools and she attended high school in Vinton, graduating in 1925.  Following graduation, she taught in Benton County rural schools.

On September 20, 1928 Irene married Alvin Gustafson.  The couple farmed near Vinton for 8 years, then in 1935, they purchased a farm near Oelwein.

Irene was active in Farm Bureau, having been a 4H girl herself.  Offices she held at various times include: President of the Scott Township, Farm Bureau Women, leader of the Merry Hearts of Scott 4H Club, President of the Stanley school Band Mother’s Club, President of Stanley PTA, and was a member of the Craft Cupboard in Oelwein since 1978.

Irene was a member of the Prairie Creek Church near Vinton, and later joined the First Christian Church of Oelwein.  When that church was destroyed in the tornado, she joined the Eastside Church of Christ.

Irene is survived by her daughters: Jeannine (Robert) Paschal of Oelwein and Kay Gustafson of Cedar Rapids; her niece (like a daughter to her) Mary Ann Foltz of Iowa City; her daughter in law Lynda Gustafson of Phoenix, AZ; her grandchildren: Susan (Bob) Lynd, Sarah (Hugh) Zembruski,  Shari Gustafson, Eric (Kim) Gustafson, Nancy James, Vicki a/k/a Janie (Wayne) Stevens, Jim (Cindy) Paschal, Laurie (Steve) Carson, Deb (Tammy) Paschal, Pamela (Michael) Horn, Nicole (Barry) Lockridge and Sid Foltz; her great-grandchildren: Crystal Garner, Daniel and Zachary Gustafson, Michael and Sarah Lynd, Andrew and Julie Zumbrusky, Brianna Gustafson, Jennifer James, Aaron (Amanda) James, Adam (Rachel) James, Emily (Drew) Blanchard, Justin (Kayla) James, Wade Stevens, Wendi (Chad Pearson) Stevens, Alyssa Carson, Lauren, Lindsay and Alexandria Paschal, Adam and Aimee Horn, Kayleigh (Duncan) Girvan and Alaina (Jerry) Sedlacek; her great-great grandchildren: Alyssa Garner, Ayden and Aspen James, Amber and Sophia James, Carson Blanchard, Joshua James, Zachary, Jade and Dylan Stevens, Blake Pearson, Cooper Girvan and Lacey Sedlacek.

In death, Irene has rejoined her parents; her husband Alvin (July 11, 1992); her brothers: Harold and George Coleman; and her sons: Howard and Larry (in infancy) Gustafson.

MaryAnn: I'm sorry for the passing of your aunt,she lived a good long life. Our mom used to buy apples from Irene and you rode our school bus. Drove near the farm recently and thought of you. Treasure the memories.
