Jerry Meyer
June 24, 1942 - July 4, 2011

 

 Jerry Donald Meyer, 69, of Oelwein passed away Monday, July 4, 2011 at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo surrounded by his family.  Funeral Services will be held on Friday, July 8, 2011 at 11:00 AM at Zion Lutheran Church in Oelwein with Pastors Charis and Leo Combs-Lay officiating.  Interment will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in Oelwein.  Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 7 from 3-8 PM at Geilenfeld Funeral Home in Oelwein.  Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home Tama-Toledo and Geilenfeld Funeral Home in Oelwein are handling the arrangements.
 Jerry was born on June 24, 1942 in Volga, Iowa the son of Leslie M. and Edna (Taylor) Meyer.  Following the death of his father in 1948, Jerry went to live with his aunt and uncle, Fern and Dale Williams.  He graduated from West Central Community High School in Maynard in 1960.  Jerry served his country in the US Army from 1961-1964.  During his enlistment, he served in Germany for over a year.  Jerry was united in marriage to Iva Mae Kerns on July 9, 1965 in Independence.  Jerry worked as a supervisor at the John Deere Foundry in Waterloo until his retirement in 1999 after thirty-two years of service.  He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Oelwein and the Oelwein American Legion.  Jerry was active in sports growing up and enjoyed playing fast pitch softball throughout his adult life.  He played on many area teams well into his 40’s and also later played in old-timers tournaments.  Later in life he also enjoyed bowling.  Jerry was a lifelong fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes, Chicago Cubs, and Green Bay Packers.  He enjoyed watching games on TV and was thrilled when he was able to see them in person.  Jerry was a devoted husband, dad, and grandpa.  His greatest passion in life was his family and he especially enjoyed attending their events and activities.
 Preceding him in death were his parents; daughter, Lynsey Meyer; two brothers Dale and Gene Meyer; and special aunt, Fern Williams.
 Survivors include his wife of nearly forty-six years, Iva Mae “Butch” Meyer of Oelwein; three children Kevin Meyer and wife Nancy of Knoxville, Heidi Meyer and fiancé Harvey Bolsinger of Strawberry Point, and Jeremy Meyer and wife Kristi of Tama; grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Trevor, Coby, Jonathan, and Jenna Meyer; special uncle, Dale Williams and wife Phyllis of Fayette; special cousins, Susan Williams, Jack Williams, Julie Williams, and Sally (Scott) Ives.  Jerry is also survived by his special extended family, Mark (Barb) Bolsinger and children, Jenna, Brandon, Blake, and Tucker, Holly (Pete) Purman and children Alyssa and Zander, Kelly Bolsinger, and Joy (Adam) Meyer and daughter Tenley, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
 A memorial fund has been established.
