Marvin Dean Bateman, 69, of Oelwein passed away on Wednesday February 5, 2014 at Oelwein Healthcare Center. Funeral Mass will be Tuesday February 11, 2014 at 11:30 AM at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Oelwein. Visitation will be Monday February 10, 2014 from 3-7 PM with a Scripture Service at 3:30 PM at the Geilenfeld Funeral Home in Oelwein.
Marvin was born on March 17, 1944 in Independence, Iowa the son of Henry and Leora (Andrews) Bateman. He grew up in the area and attended the Winthrop School and graduated from East Buchanan High School in 1962. On September 7, 1964 Marvin was united in marriage with Arlene Magsamen at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Lamont.
Marvin worked with his father and brother Jim as a plumber and electrician. In 1973 Marvin and his family moved to Oelwein where he worked as a salesperson for the Chandler Company (Cedar Rapids) until 1977. He enjoyed playing golf, fishing, sharing a good joke or two and following the Green Bay Packers. He touched many people’s hearts and will be dearly missed by his family and many friends.
Marv is survived by his wife Arlene of Oelwein; two daughters: Sheryl (Tyler) Rager and Erin Bateman of Ankeny, Iowa; two brothers: Virgil (Winifred) Bateman and James (Betty Jean) Bateman of Winthrop, Iowa; his sister Charlotte (Walter) Knipper of Petersberg, Iowa and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, two infant brothers: Willie and Larry, and brother-in-law Alphonse Magsamen.
