Leroy Shannon
April 30, 1942 - October 14, 2019

Leroy Shannon, 77, of Independence passed away Monday October 14, 2019.  Visitation will be from 11:00 AM–1:00 PM on Saturday October 19, 2019 at the Geilenfeld-Buehner Funeral Home in Oelwein.  Memorial services will then begin at 1:00 PM.  Inurnment will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens at Hazleton.  A memorial fund has been established.

Leroy Charles Shannon was born April 30, 1942 on the family farm in Independence to parents Paul and Alta (Ohl) Shannon.  He attended country school in Buchanan County.  On October 26, 1968 he was united in marriage with Bertha Necker in Wisconsin.  He was a longtime farmer and had worked at Iowa Ham and also operated a mobile mixer mill grinding feed.

Leroy loved to be a farmer; on a tractor, in the combine, in the field.  He was the caretaker of his mother for many years.  He loved his cats; George and Sugar were the pride of his life, and of course, so were his two children Angie and Andy!  Leroy was well liked by his many friends and family.  He will be dearly missed by them all.

Left to celebrate Leroy’s life are his children:  Angela Shannon of Independence and Andy Shannon of Oelwein; his grandchildren: Brittney (Matt) Baerg of Oelwein and Zach Shannon of Oelwein; his great-grandchildren: Emma and Brantley Baerg; his siblings: Alice Brown of Waterloo, Helen Welsch of Brandon, Cecil Shannon of Oelwein, Clarence (Alice) Shannon of Fairbank and Joyce Leninger of Evansdale; and his many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Bertha; his siblings: Virginia Lumsden, Betty Lenihan, Marshall Shannon, Duane “Red” Shannon, Howard Shannon and Robert Shannon in infancy.

So sorry to hear of your loss Angie and Andy and family. Sending prayers up for peace and comfort for you and all who have crossed paths with your Dad Leroy. Although it never comes easy for me to do this… We are to celebrate the life that they have lived. We are to rejoice in the fact they reunited with her maker who has prepared a place for them. They are free of the pains and the burdens of this life here on earth. It is hard to celebrate a life lost, but the celebration is not about us… It is about them. Their eternal life. The place prepared in their name. The mansion. The big beautiful garden. And to be free of all the worldly troubles being left behind. We, those left behind, have to continue onward and upward making the best of what we are dealt. Why? Because those that have gone before us want to witness and rejoice in our successes. The circle of life continues and unfortunately we do not have a pause, a stop, or a rewind button. This is not a goodbye. Instead it is till we meet again, and we will meet again with those that have gone before us in the Kingdom of Heaven, in the place that has been prepared just for us, one of those mansions in the sky.
