Agnes Potratz, 97, of Oelwein passed away on Wednesday February 19, 2014 at Grandview Healthcare Center. Visitation will be from 4-7 PM on Friday March 14, 2014 at the Geilenfeld Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 11 AM on Saturday March 15, 2014 at Zion Lutheran Church in Oelwein.
Agnes Marie Potratz was born October 19th, 1916 in Elma, Iowa to Heinrich Christoph Stueber and Maria Amanda Eick. They lived there until the 1920s when her family moved to a farm outside Westgate, IA. She married Alvin William Potratz on February 27th, 1938 at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Westgate, IA. She and Alvin lived in the Westgate area for many years, enjoying their extended families and many close friends.
Agnes was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Alvin, her brother Heinrich, two sisters: Laura Laube and Gartha Laube, her daughter, Jeanette, and one granddaughter.
Agnes is survived by her daughters Karen (Clay) Wittman of Schaumburg, IL, Beverly (Roger) Jeanes of Westgate, IA and sons, Michael (Teresa) Potratz of Urbandale, IA and Bryan (Robin) Potratz of Wheaton, IL. Her life was blessed with 15 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
Agnes was a life-long member of St. Peter Lutheran Church, the American Legion Auxillary in Westgate, and Zion Lutheran Church in Oelwein, IA. She loved working for the church and giving back to the community. She was known for her lively stories, touching poems, and sense of humor. She loved to cook and was noted for her baking, especially her round coffee cake.
